How We Select Investment Managers

The premise of our multi-manager investment philosophy is our belief that through a deep understanding of investment markets and investment managers, we can identify and exploit innovative investment strategies to deliver superior investment returns.

Identifying Superior Managers

We have a rigorous investment manager review and selection process based on quality manager research, where we focus on assessing the following manager characteristics:

  • People and Organisation - key success factors for any investment team
  • Investment Philosophy - core beliefs and exploited market inefficiencies
  • Process - robust, disciplined, and repeatable
  • Performance - evidence of process and philosophy at work

Our aim is to select the best fund managers in each sector which exhibit special qualities, by undertaking exhaustive in-house research, including numerous face-to-face meetings with key investment staff. We have a track record of selecting managers which exhibit strong and sustainable competitive advantages and which are capable of delivering significant value-add over the medium to long term.

Broad Global Research Universe

We draw on extensive research resources, both proprietary and external, to identify a ‘full universe’ comprising around 20,000 potential investment products and strategies. These are drawn from the databases maintained in-house, from our associated companies Ibbotson Associates and Morningstar Associates, and our hedge fund adviser. New ideas also flow from our contacts in the global marketplace.

This comprehensive list is subject to a number of screens and filters to isolate between 100 to 250 products, which form a review list upon which our investment teams focus the majority of their research efforts. The objective is to identify products and strategies which are suited to our multi-manager approach to portfolio construction.
